The process of moving is quite stressful and time consuming for most of us. Do not worry, because we got your back. I would like to share some tips on how to avoid the “craze” of moving and not forget that “one thing” that has been keeping you up at night.
1 month before: Cancel recurring charges
Whether it’s your gym membership or your tanning salon, most places these days require a 30-day cancellation notice. Plan ahead to avoid those recurring charges while in the trenches and cancel it at least one month ahead.
2 weeks before: Call your car insurance company
It is definitely a great idea to closely monitor your vehicle insurance during the moving transition. Even if you are moving a few blocks south, it is recommended to call the insurance company and update coverage to the new address.
2 weeks before: Change your address early
U.S. Postal Service now offers a convenient and easy way to change the address online by filling out a simple form. Yet it is highly recommended to change the address about 2 weeks prior to the moving date to avoid delay.
1 week before: Organize your finances
Transitioning from the old home to the new can get a little hectic when it comes to your monthly bills, such as mortgage, rent, or cable bill. For convenience, try setting up the majority of your bills on auto-pay to avoid late charges and fees. Tracking the charges online on your monthly bank statement is way easier than looking through piles of boxes scattered around the house.
1 day before: Snap pictures of your electronics
Looking at the tangled wires in the back of your TV and Play Station can be overwhelming. But if you unplug them all and nicely pack those cords into the box, you will have even harder time assembling your electronics later. Snap a picture of that “tangled bundle of joy”, so you can easily plug them back in later. Using some tape and labels would be a great option as well, unless your wires are neatly color coded.
1 day before: Pack your plants
We always have some plants that hold a special value in our hearts, but in the process of moving it becomes nearly impossible to remember them all. If you do not wish to leave that memory behind, buy some large plastic buckets ahead of the time and transport the plants separately.
1 day before: Stock a go-to box
Make sure to have your “first 24 hours” box ready to go for your new home. Do not over pack and make sure to stick with necessities such as cleaning supplies, paper towels, silverware and maybe a bottle of wine to celebrate your hard work.
